What is the opportunity?

The Director, Enterprise Architecture role reports into RBC’s Chief Architect, Enterprise Services. This role will be part of an elite team of enterprise architects who are experts in one or more technology domains like integration, application, data, security or infrastructure and collaborate with other domain experts in creating frameworks and reference architectures/patterns. The solutions will have to operate in a multi-cloud environment and integrate with On-premise systems. Solutions should be cost-optimal, designed for sustainable operations.

In this role, you will be expected to develop practical EA frameworks and methodologies to advance the maturity and effectiveness of the architecture community. This includes establishing best practices to design for Non-Functional requirements, application portfolio management, application portfolio health assessments, technology lifecycle management, business architecture, establishing taxonomies, setting strategic architecture visions and governance etc.

What will you do?

  • You are expected to coordinate among distributed architecture and technology teams to facilitate delivery of enterprise capabilities. You will work with Architects from multiple technology and LOB domains to create a holistic target state architecture for RBC and govern to achieve it. You will lead and participate enterprise workgroups to establish architecture strategies such as data, infrastructure, Cloud, Integration and security.
  • You are expected to establish yourself as a competent and respected Technology professional amongst peers and partners. You must be able to communicate with a wide range of stakeholders, from Executives, Business Partners, Architects and Engineers.
  • You must be able to lead from the front, frame the objectives and establish partnerships. You should be able to voice strong technology opinions while also actively listen to partners and deliver outcomes and decisions that will be adopted across the firm.
  • You will need work with Vendors to understand their product, its capabilities and negotiate future roadmap items.
  • You will identify and coordinate definitions for enterprise patterns for RBCs technology platform that spans Public Cloud, On-Premise (Mainframe, Distributed, and Private Cloud) and SaaS solutions. They will be required to address Data, Integration and Security concerns across these environments and and work across various functional teams (Info Sec, App Dev, Infrastructure, Data and Integration) to drive architecture decisions.
  • You will present your work at the Enterprise Architecture Board, a committee of Senior Technology Executives, to approve Technology “Big Bets”, enterprise patterns, and find solutions for process or technology challenges that impede progress to achieve the strategic plan.
  • Provide advisory and design services for key enterprise-wide services
  • Work with LOB and Technology Domain Architects to influence and drive reuse, coordinate between service providers to drive coherence of roadmaps and identify synergies and gaps.

  • What do you need to succeed?


  • 15+ years of experience in the domains of application development, integration, infrastructure and security
  • Recent experience with Event Based Platform Architecture (Kafka)
  • Strong communications and active listening skills. Demonstrate leadership and delegate effectively. Must be able to make and drive decisions with speed.
  • Expert knowledge, experience, and understanding of architecture, application development, application systems design, and integration.
  • A practitioner of Solution Architecture with a record of both program and delivery outcomes based on their architectures.
  • Capability to establish and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with distributed architecture areas, Application Development, RBC business groups and others.
  • Must be able to influence the architecture community to take an “opinionated” stance on standards
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and aggressive deliverables and take a leadership role in moving initiatives forward and removing obstacles
  • Must have expertise in at least one Technology Domain and working knowledge of other domains and technology including Cloud, Containers, API, Events, Security, Integration, Infrastructure, Data and AI.
  • Nice-to-have

  • Lean Six Sigma or equivalent to drive continuous lean operations
  • Have worked in a large enterprise, preferably at financial institutions, insurance or healthcare
  • Experience researching emerging technology and providing Points of View or whitepapers
