Those risks, and opportunities, need sound, evidence-based insights from which to act, and that’s what we want you to deliver. Associated Engineering is seeking a highly qualified Climate Data Scientist to support its growing climate change practice. This position can be based in any one of our offices so please indicate which office(s) in your cover letter. You can:

  • Source, interpret, manage and apply climate data to support engineering projects in infrastructure delivery, as well as enterprise-wide and community adaptation planning.
  • Develop climate data to be used in climate hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments using industry standard, and potentially emergent and novel, frameworks.
  • Support clients to understand the nature, role and importance of climate data (past, present and future) in their business and/or project.
  • Critically assess climate change models and climate data (past and future) so that you can provide decision-relevant insight to clients and help inform their decision-making processes.
  • Source relevant climate data and undertake subsequent downscaling in the absence of appropriate public sources (which you will be expected to assess for suitability).
  • Conduct secondary research and synthesize the results into clear coherent communications that meet client needs in understanding the problem and the implications of a changing climate.
  • Develop bespoke numerical and/or analytical models, using the appropriate tools/languages, to support the integration of climate change into project design and delivery.
  • Engage directly with clients and their stakeholders in discussions, working sessions, project coordination and problem-solving.

The role entails sourcing, managing, analyzing and interpreting climate change data. The successful candidate will be able to easily manipulate large climate data-sets and conduct analyses to provide decision-relevant insight to the future climate for Associated’s clients. Assertions on climatic conditions and insights must be effectively articulated through clear and concise written work (both formal and informal) that is second to none. Presentations (to be delivered virtually and in person) must be expertly developed and with an engaging delivery. The role will support Associated’s work across the country. Typical projects might include the provision of climate insights to inform risk sharing agreements for P3 projects; or, the provision of climate change data and insight to inform national infrastructure codes, and the completion of climate hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments at various scales. You will be integral to the development of a growing climate risk practice and play an active role in business development. Your responsibilities will include the following:

  • Source, interpret, manage and apply climate data to engineering projects.
  • Critically assess climate change models and climate data (past and future) so that you can provide decision-relevant insight to clients and help inform their decision-making processes related to a changing climate.
  • Develop climate hazard, vulnerability and risk assessments using the most appropriate framework, and if required develop such frameworks.
  • Conduct secondary research and synthesize the results into clear coherent communications that meet client needs in understanding the problem and the implications of a changing climate.
  • Prepare compelling reports and presentations to be provided to clients for projects and in support of business development.
  • Design and facilitate stakeholder engagement, through structured interviews, facilitated workshops, questionnaires and meetings.
  • Lead the company’s internal Subject Matter Experts in developing and enhancing Associated’s internal climate science, modelling and data capabilities.
  • Provide senior review (QA/QC) and oversight to junior staff in the preparation of climate data intensive assignments/deliverables.
  • Support building a growing climate risk practice, and the associated business development (through direct client meetings, association involvement/representation, content development, etc.).

Job Requirements

Your skills and qualifications include:

Essentials

  • 8+ years of experience in climate data science.
  • Master’s degree, or higher, in a relevant field (e.g. the natural sciences, appropriate engineering disciplines, geography, etc.); with a preference for proven professional experience or research/thesis work related to climate data science and its application
  • Highly literate in the physical basis for climate change.
  • Detailed knowledge of the different types of climate change analyses, strengths/weaknesses of different: climate models, downscaling techniques, future climate scenarios.
  • Aptitude for conducting both quantitative and qualitative research and data analysis, including statistical analysis, modelling and forecasting, as well as scientific data visualization.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and presentation skills with an ability to effectively engage audiences, as well as an ability to clearly summarize findings and offer meaningful insight.
  • An orientation towards client service, including the ability to elicit and understand client needs and desired outcomes.
  • Effective project management and organizational skills, including an ability to manage competing priorities.

Preferable

  • Connections to the academic community to bring the latest data and thinking to bear on real-world projects.
  • Non-technical data visualization skills that distill complex data and ideas into images that are easy to understand and are instructive.
  • Experience with the climate hazard, risk and vulnerability frameworks and the application of climate data in practical situations.
  • Experience in adaptation and climate change response planning.
